Christina Applegate Discusses Parenting Challenges Amid Illness

Christina Applegate has opened up about her struggles with multiple sclerosis, which has significantly impacted her life and ability to parent her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie. The 54-year-old actress, currently promoting her memoir “Sad Eyes,” shared some of the deeply personal ways this illness has affected her relationship with Sadie, whom she shares with her husband, Martin Lenoble.

“I really want to take her to school and events—that’s what I enjoy the most,” Applegate stated. “It’s our time together. I often think to myself, ‘Get her home safely, then I can return to bed.’ And that’s precisely what I do.”

Due to her condition, Applegate expressed feeling a newfound freedom to live honestly. “Life doesn’t always wrap up neatly,” she said. “Sometimes, people’s experiences are just, well, difficult. So I aim to be as open and genuine as possible.”

During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Applegate explained her decision to let Sadie read through her old diary. She emphasized that it was important for her daughter to understand that she is not alone in her struggles. “You’re not special in that way; your mom gets it,” she said. “I know you’re hurting, and I’m sorry…such things happen, and they’re tough.”

She elaborated, “I wanted her to recognize that I understand what it means to experience pain.” Applegate acknowledged her mistakes in parenting but encouraged Sadie to feel connected to her own emotions as they navigate this journey together. “I want you to feel me, and for you to know that I feel for you,” she remarked. “That’s really what my book is about.”

In a podcast episode from August, Applegate recounted how her health challenges have “broken” Sadie in some ways. “Before my illness, she only knew me as someone who was active—running, dancing, and engaged. When I got sick in 2021, she was stoic, but I could see the impact,” Applegate reflected.

She described moments when her disability became starkly apparent to Sadie, especially the struggle to perform daily tasks. “Now, when I’m in bed and can’t move well, it’s heartbreaking for both of us. It’s tough to see her realize that the mother she knew has changed,” Applegate shared.

Looking ahead, Applegate recognized that her situation is likely to become more challenging. “As time goes on, it might hurt her even more,” she noted, adding that the pandemic only complicated matters further. “I can see it in her eyes. She’s aware of the loss.” However, she finds beauty in their relationship, noting how Sadie supports her during outings by offering her arm and helping with her cane.

Sadie often asks for Applegate’s help at home, adding a bittersweet touch to their interactions. “Sometimes, she’ll request me to come make her food because she feels I’m the only one who can do that,” Applegate said, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of their connection amidst her ongoing battle with MS.
