World famous film director Christopher Nolan oppenheimer The 2023 box office hit recently recalled the hilarious moment a Peloton instructor threw away one of his movies during a workout.
Nolan reflected on winning the Best Director award from the New York Film Critics Circle, citing it as an example of the democratization of film criticism in the age of social media.
“Directors have a complicated emotional relationship with critics and reviewers.” he said those in attendance. “The question we're always asked is, do you read reviews? Nolan recalled a time during a Peloton virtual session when an instructor suddenly scrapped one of his movies. She apparently had no idea that the film's director was among her own students.
“I was riding in the Peloton. I was dying. And the instructor started talking about one of my movies and said, 'Has anyone seen this?' It was a few hours of my life and I'll never get it back! ” said Nolan. “when [film critic] Rex Reed treats your movies like crap, he doesn't ask you to work out! In today's world full of opinions, there is a belief that film criticism is becoming democratized, but I personally believe that critical evaluation of films should be a profession rather than an instinctive one. Nolan then made some pretty insightful points about film criticism as a profession.
“What we have here tonight is a group of experts attempting objectivity,” Nolan said. “Writing objectively about film is clearly a contradiction in terms, but it is this desire for objectivity that makes criticism essential, timeless, and beneficial to filmmakers and the filmmaking community.”
Hours after Nolan's story broke on social media, footage of Peloton critics began to go viral, demonstrating the immense power of the Age of Democracy.Turns out the movie she was bashing was his 2020 time-travel action thriller Tenet.
“This song is from the soundtrack of a movie called TENET. Has anyone seen this shit?” she asked the virtual audience. “Has anyone else seen this besides me? Because I need a manual.” Someone has to explain this.”
“Yeah…I'm not kidding,” she said later. “What the hell was going on in that movie? You know what? Seriously, you have to be a neuroscientist to understand. And that's two and a half hours of my life that I want back. I want it back.”
Footage of Nolan's speech showed that he took the criticism fairly well and handled it with grace.

This instructor was later identified as Jen Sherman. Although he praised Nolan's efforts, he deeply apologized to Nolan. oppenheimer. She also invited him to attend future classes.
“I watched 'Oppenheimer' twice. That's six hours of my life that I never want to give back… Mr. Nolan, would you like to come with me to the Peloton studio? Jen Sherman, an instructor at Christopher Nolan's Peloton, responded by expressing her love for “Oppenheimer” and inviting him to her class.
