Walmart Faces Possible Boycott Amid Anti-Trump Protests

Walmart may become a target of a boycott linked to a magazine campaign, following the funding of a full-page advertisement in the New York Times by Christy Walton, an heir to the retail giant. The ad promotes nationwide protests against President Trump.

The advertisement is part of the “No Kings” movement, which is encouraging Americans to “mobilize” for protests scheduled for Saturday, coinciding with Flag Day and Trump’s Birthday. The goal is to “Reject Authoritarianism.”

On that day, Trump is expected to host a significant military parade in Washington, D.C.

Christy Walton is the widow of John T. Walton, one of the sons of Walmart founder Sam Walton. While she hasn’t been actively involved in the company’s operations, she holds about 1.9% of Walmart’s shares, with an estimated net worth of $19.3 billion, as noted by Forbes.

The “No Kings” movement plans to organize around 1,500 protests across the country to counter the military parade, although Washington, D.C. is notably missing from the list of protest locations.

The advertisement, which appeared in Sunday’s paper, doesn’t directly mention Trump but critiques actions that threaten civil rights and democratic principles. It proclaims, “Our country’s honor, dignity and integrity are not on sale,” and includes a QR code linking to maps of over 1,800 planned protests nationwide.

A spokesperson for the White House, Kush Desai, expressed skepticism about Walton’s motives, saying, “The great, left-wing billionaire feels like he’s burning some of her inheritance for PR stunts.” Desai emphasized that more than 77 million Americans voted in favor of border security and mass deportation policies, which Trump’s administration is committed to upholding.

Supporters of Trump have begun to push for a boycott of Walmart, with many taking to social media to voice their opinions. Kari Lake, a former Arizona gubernatorial candidate and now a special advisor to the White House, questioned whether people would still choose to shop there.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) criticized the Walmart family, suggesting they were excessively friendly toward Chinese tariffs. A hashtag encouraging a Walmart boycott gained traction on social media, with some users labeling Christy Walton a “traitor.”

Longtime Trump supporter Roger Stone declared, “Boycott Walmart!” adding that the heirs are essentially supporting the protests while promoting a peaceful exit from their stores.

A representative for Christy Walton stated that the advertisements were meant to foster peaceful civic engagement and that Walton does not fund violent protests. Instead, the aim is to encourage dialogue and community involvement.

No Kings organizers believe the absence of protests in D.C. is a deliberate decision meant to diminish what they see as a political spectacle surrounding Trump’s parade, which marks both the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army and Trump’s 79th birthday.

Trump has issued warnings to those planning to protest the parade, stating they would face “very great power.”

On the topic of peaceful protest, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt acknowledged that while the president supports such rights, the focus remains on safety in places like Los Angeles.

Leavitt remarked on Trump’s view of himself, asserting, “The President considers himself to be the President of the United States of America.” The administration emphasizes pride in American democracy, where civic engagement should flourish.

Christy Walton, who inherited her wealth following her husband’s death in a plane crash in 2005, tends to keep a low public profile, mainly focusing on charitable and environmental efforts. Though her political engagement has generally been limited, she has backed educational and cultural initiatives in the past.

Walton’s backing of the “No Kings” campaign is rare among high-profile figures opposing Trump. In response to the controversy, Walmart quickly released a statement clarifying that Walton does not play an active role in company decisions.

Company spokesman Joe Pennington reiterated their condemnation of violence and expressed a commitment to the safety of associates and customers, particularly in sensitive areas like Los Angeles.

Recently, Trump encouraged Walmart to absorb the impact of tariffs imposed on foreign imports without passing costs onto consumers. However, social media has showcased rising prices at Walmart, with the spokesman emphasizing that price changes are a normal aspect of business influenced by various factors.
