Chrysler is recalling about 286,000 vehicles over concerns that their side airbag inflators could explode, injuring or killing people.
The recall includes some 2018 to 2021 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles, as well as airbag replacements in about 1,000 vehicles, according to a separate notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Parts included.

The notice states that side curtain airbag inflators can rupture and “could result in sharp metal fragments striking the occupants, resulting in injury or death.”
The warning about the recalled replacement parts adds, “If not installed in the vehicle, expansion and rupture could result in injury or death to bystanders.”

The automaker plans to mail notices to owners of affected vehicles in early May, and dealers will replace both side airbags free of charge.

Chrysler, owned by Stellantis, said certain vehicles were equipped with SABIC inflators, which may have been contaminated with moisture during manufacturing by a supplier. This can lead to stress corrosion and potential failure.

These inflators do not use the same propellant or inflator design as previously recalled Takata airbags, the automaker said.
