Chubby Checker Skips Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

In an unexpected turn of events, rock and roll legend Chubby Checker has made it clear that he’s “still alive” after opting out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for over three decades while waiting for his big moment.

At 83, Checker announced on a recent show that he won’t be attending the ceremony in Los Angeles on November 8th. He cited a scheduling conflict as the reason for his absence.

“When I told my manager, ‘Please, introduce the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, make sure you’re doing what I love most,’” he recounted to fans. “Make sure you’re in front of your audience, in front of your live audience, not your TV audience.” This sentiment was shared on social media on July 29th.

Best known for his 1960 hit “The Twist,” Checker has been part of discussions surrounding the Hall of Fame since the inaugural class in 1985, yet he only received his first nomination this year.

With hopes of making it, he revealed that his manager booked him a gig on the same date, which he used as an opportunity to reach out to the Hall of Fame.

On April 27th, Checker was announced as one of 13 musicians selected for the 2025 induction. He’ll join a roster of classic rock performers such as Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Soundgarden, and The White Stripes.

During a conversation with Hall of Fame representatives, Checker and his team declined an invitation to fly to the ceremony, stating, “We’re not here, we have a gig.”

Born Ernest Evans, Checker emphasized the importance of missing the ceremony to convey that he remains strong and engaged in music. “Back to being ‘older people’,” he said, reflecting on perceptions of aging. “People think he’s old, maybe retired, nothing left to offer.” He chuckled, adding that he wanted to prove he’s still vital, not just “an old man with a crutch.”

He expressed his preference for live audiences over digital viewership, stating, “Let’s do the kind of show I do today to show that I’m alive. The audience is amazing, my dreams are still fulfilled, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is happening at the same time.”

The 2025 ceremony, scheduled for November 8th at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, appears not to conflict with any known Checker events at this time.

Interestingly, “The Twist” was recognized as the “Hottest Single” of all time by Billboard in 2008, a title it maintained for over a decade. However, in 2021, the magazine updated its list, granting that distinction to “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd.
