Chuck Todd says Trump appears to be getting his ‘swagger’ back, appealing as ‘outside disrupter’

NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd argued that former President Trump may be his best 2024 presidential candidate in years because he is regaining the charm and charisma he had in 2016.

MSNBC host Katy Tur argued on an MSNBC report Wednesday that Trump has been on a “losing streak” in recent years, reviewing how both the former president and the Republican Party have suffered consecutive losses in national election contests since Trump took office in 2016.

“Why should we believe that now is different, that President Biden and the Democratic Party are suddenly weaker than they were two years ago, four years ago, six years ago?” she asked.

“Well, the White House is a political party,” Todd responded. “Not to oversimplify, but Donald Trump’s rhetoric and even his swagger is more similar to the 2016 campaign that you covered in detail, Katie, than it is to 2020.”

Chuck Todd, chief political analyst for NBC News, argued that Trump is regaining the charisma and energy that captivated voters in the 2016 election.

He went on to recall a pattern he had discussed with another media personality, who noted that “when Trump is losing, the worst of Trump comes out, and when Trump is winning, or thinks he has the advantage, he becomes a different person, a different candidate.”

Discussing Trump’s recent speech in Detroit, Todd noted, “He was weirdly light-hearted. He was trying to be funny and all that kind of stuff.”

He contrasted this with past years, saying, “From 2017 through 2022 and even the 2023 primaries, all we’ve seen from Trump is anger, frustration, anger, anger. What’s interesting is that if he were to somehow let go of the frustration, he might end up looking like the 2016 candidate, the outside disruptor.”

Tur questioned whether Trump could avoid airing his grievances in the midst of a legal battle.

“But it’s hard to imagine he’d abandon his grievance when the ruling is coming out in Manhattan in a few weeks,” she said. “The presidential immunity decision is going to be announced by the Supreme Court. There’s reason to continue the grievance. And this whole campaign seems less about policy for him and more about, ‘What they do to me is what they want to do to you. My grievance is your grievance.'”
