Cincinnati Resident Speaks Out After Violent Attack
Cincinnati – Following a highly publicized violent incident in downtown Cincinnati, another victim has shared his harrowing experience of a city riot.
On the night of September 23, 2023, Chris Lewis, 39, was returning home from a Cincinnati Reds game when he encountered three young boys who attacked him unexpectedly.
“They immediately locked eyes with me,” Lewis recounted in a recent interview. “I realized right away that I was in trouble.”
Over a year and a half, Lewis underwent six surgeries to address his vision problems, but ultimately, he lost sight in one eye and now uses a prosthetic. “After they hit me, I quickly discovered my eye was vulnerable,” he explained. “I was sitting on the ground, covering my face, trying to inform them of the serious injuries they’d caused, but they just kept kicking me.”
The teens stole Lewis’s earbuds and phone before fleeing the scene.
“It’s really impacted my quality of life,” he admitted. “I’m having trouble driving, and my confidence has taken a big hit. I look back at my life before this – it’s like a different world. This has affected not just my day-to-day life, but my relationships too.”
The city seems to be grappling with rising crime, and Lewis noted that no arrests have been made in connection with his attack. He feels that resources are being stretched too thin. “We’ve had persistent issues with these boys, and it feels like the authorities can’t keep up. It’s as if they believe this is just a normal occurrence,” he said.
Reflecting on a previous incident on July 26 in Cincinnati, he emphasized his attack was unprovoked. There’s a sense of frustration and disappointment over the lack of meaningful solutions to the ongoing violence, which he describes as “ineffective.” He hopes for greater collaboration to ensure safety in the community, expressing concern that discussions around crime are too polarized. “Everyone deserves to feel secure, right? We need to unite and figure this out,” he stated.
Lewis’s mother, Karen, shares his thoughts, feeling that enough resources have yet to be allocated to solve violent crimes. She mentioned that a detective had identified the suspect but stated that they hadn’t made an arrest due to procedural uncertainties. “We tried to offer a reward and even had information pointing towards a name, but it seems the efforts just weren’t strong enough,” she said, criticizing the juvenile justice system as being too lenient.
Cincinnati Police Officer Jonathan Cunningham commented that identifying suspects is challenging, especially given the early timing of the attack. He maintains that the investigative team is fully committed to addressing violence in the community.
Cynthia, another victim from a summer incident, described her ongoing recovery from severe brain trauma, expressing gratitude for the support she’s received. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack, but two more remain at large. Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval has promised further inquiries and potential arrests as the situation develops.
