Cinde Warmington begins campaign for governor of New Hampshire to challenge Kelly Ayotte

Democratic Candidate Emerges in New Hampshire Gubernatorial Race

As the November election approaches, Democrats have put forth a significant contender to challenge Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte, who is aiming for her second term in New Hampshire.

Cynde Warmington, a former member of the New Hampshire Board of Selectmen, officially launched her second gubernatorial campaign on Wednesday.

The Democrats are determined to reclaim the “corner office” in the state Capitol, a position that has been held by Republicans for nearly ten years. This dominance began with former Governor Chris Sununu, followed by Ayotte, who took office about 13 months ago.

In her campaign announcement and accompanying video, Warmington criticized Ayotte’s handling of affordability issues, an area that’s become more pressing amid rising inflation since President Trump assumed his second term.

“Food, housing, electricity, and property tax costs are overwhelming working families, and Kelly Ayotte is making it worse in New Hampshire,” Warmington claimed.

She also accused Ayotte of not standing up against Trump’s aggressive policies, particularly regarding the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers planned for the state.

“I will oppose rising healthcare costs and work towards small business support while avoiding taxes on sales and income,” she emphasized.

While Ayotte, a former senator and attorney general, has had her share of disagreements with Trump, her approval ratings remain relatively strong, hovering between 50% and 45% according to a recent poll. Her fundraising efforts have also been impressive.

Though Democrats have held the state’s congressional seats for a decade, they haven’t won a gubernatorial election since 2014. Nonetheless, they are feeling reenergized as Republicans across the state and nationally face a challenging political landscape.

Ayotte’s campaign swiftly rebuked Warmington, pointing to her lobbying history with the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. “Cynde Warmington spent her career promoting OxyContin and supporting a notorious pill mill. She has profited from harming New Hampshire residents and is unqualified for governor,” said spokesperson John Corbett.

Warmington previously ran for governor two years ago but lost her primary to former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and subsequently lost to Ayotte by a significant margin in the general election.

Now, there’s speculation about whether Warmington will secure a dominant position in the Democratic primary. Portsmouth’s Democratic Mayor DeGlan McEachern, who is contemplating a run for governor, expressed that the stakes are high for New Hampshire Democrats. “I think it’s crucial for us to consider new avenues if we want to defeat Kelly Ayotte,” he remarked. “I look forward to discussing this more in the future.”
