Citi Launches Strata Elite Credit Card to Compete with Amex and Chase

Citi is stepping up its game with the new Strata Elite credit card, which has an annual fee of $595. This card aims to attract high spenders interested in travel and fine dining perks, competing directly with offerings from American Express and JPMorgan Chase.

The Strata Elite card promises nearly $1,500 worth of benefits each year, including access to hotels, car rentals, and unique experiences. Citi is positioning itself against other banks targeting customers who don’t mind paying higher fees for these kinds of rewards.

According to Pam Habner, who heads the branded cards and lending at Citi, competition always drives innovation. She mentioned that the $595 fee is more affordable compared to the annual fee for JPMorgan’s Sapphire Reserve card, which can go as high as $795.

This new card is noteworthy as it marks the first collaboration between Citi and MasterCard, offering additional benefits that come with MasterCard’s exclusive collections. Habner stated that they designed these benefits to be practical, focusing on real rewards rather than promotional deals tied to specific brands.

The timing of this launch is interesting, occurring as banks intensify efforts to attract wealthy consumers while simultaneously making it more challenging for low-income borrowers to qualify for new cards.

Recent analysis has shown a decline in new credit card openings, marking a 5% drop in the second quarter compared to last year. More lenders are shifting their focus toward affluent customers, tightening the criteria for those looking for new credit card options.

Research indicates that borrowers with lower credit scores, often termed subprime borrowers, are more inclined to seek out these new credit cards, perhaps in a bid to improve their credit scores while managing their expenses.
