Progress in Pitcher Reinforcements

Clark Schmidt is on track for a comeback following his second Tommy John surgery.

On Saturday, just before the Yankees’ game against the Dodgers was postponed due to rain, Schmidt participated in his first simulated game as part of his rehabilitation.

“It felt great. I was really moving well, and it was refreshing to compete again. Just putting my cleats on the dirt felt exciting,” the right-hander shared.

Looking ahead, Schmidt plans to take part in another simulated game in about five days.

During this session, he threw 15 pitches, focusing exclusively on fastballs.

He was cautious about pushing himself too hard, as medical staff advised him to take it easy.

On Saturday, he recorded a top speed of 94 mph.

Reflecting on his approach, Schmidt mentioned, “Gerrit [Cole] thinks that’s the right way to go. In his first live performance in spring training, he threw just fastballs too. I did some spin work before the game, but it was all fastballs for me.”

Manager Aaron Boone stated that he’s not certain what role Schmidt will fill upon his return. Still, Schmidt is open to any position, whether starting or in the bullpen.

What matters most to him right now is rejoining his teammates.

“That’s my main focus. I want to be part of this team,” Schmidt said. “Of course, I think about my career in the long run, but at this moment, I recognize the talent in this team. I’ve seen the best of us this season. I just lie down at night wondering, ‘How can I make a positive impact on this team?’

At 30, Schmidt was having a solid season before he suffered an elbow injury, having started 14 games and pitched 78.3 innings with a 3.32 ERA.
