Clashes Between Immigrants and Locals in Murcia

Tensions Escalate in Torre Pacheco

In Torre Pacheco, a conflict erupted over the past couple of nights between local Spanish residents and immigrant groups, particularly involving a group of young Moroccan men who allegedly assaulted some older locals.

The altercations between immigrant groups and nationalist, anti-immigration factions unfolded on Friday and Saturday evenings. Local reports described it as a “spill of violence.” A right-leaning newspaper highlighted how various far-right groups staged anti-immigration rallies following the earlier clashes. The situation escalated when these groups confronted a significant number of North African immigrants, resulting in a chaotic street fight.

There were claims that nationalist groups engaged in “hunting” for immigrants believed to be involved in the initial attacks. However, no arrests have been reported regarding this. Additionally, there were accusations circulating on immigrant social media that Indigenous people were targeted with weapons.

In response to the unrest, numerous police officers were dispatched to contain the situation, resulting in injuries among several officers during the clashes.

A government official condemned what they referred to as the “racist persecution” of immigrants, emphasizing that violent actions stem from right-wing extremists.

Antonio Jose Martinez, president of a local residents’ association, expressed disapproval of the violence but attributed the ongoing issues not solely to far-right elements. He noted a significant rise in crime over the last decade or so, saying that anxiety within the community is becoming harder to manage. He cautioned that if the government fails to address crime effectively, more serious issues may arise than the disturbances witnessed recently.

Jose Angel Antero, a leader of the populist Vox Party in Murcia, referred to the group’s departure from the local coalition government last year over disagreements related to the distribution of illegal immigrants. He asserted that their stance has been vindicated and emphasized a need to restore safety in local neighborhoods.

Earlier this week, Vox indicated intentions to deport millions of immigrants from Spain if they gain power, a measure that would also impact second-generation immigrants.
