Clinton faces backlash over furniture issue following remarks about the ballroom

Trump and Clinton Reignite Furniture Controversy

Recently, conservatives and supporters of Donald Trump took aim at former First Lady Hillary Clinton, recalling her controversial 2021 furniture dispute with her husband, former President Bill Clinton. This came after she attempted to criticize Trump for initiating the construction of a ballroom in the White House.

“At least he didn’t steal the silverware,” quipped Texas Senator Ted Cruz in a post on social media. This backlash highlighted the 2001 incident where the Clintons were estimated to have received around $28,000 worth of furniture from donors and later paid the federal government $86,000 for various gifts they had accepted.

In a statement from 2001, the Clintons asserted that “no gift was ever removed from the White House without the approval of the Office of the White House Usher and Curator.” They added that if there was an error in the inventory, offending items would be returned.

Hillary Clinton further clarified at the time, saying that all the items were viewed as gifts. “That’s what the permanent record of the White House shows,” she stated. “But if there was a different intent, we will certainly respect the donor’s intent.”

Fast forward to the present, President Trump has been discussing plans to modernize the White House, recently announcing that the ballroom construction has officially begun. A report from the White House claims that this project is funded privately, so it won’t cost taxpayers anything.

According to the White House, the new ballroom will occupy 90,000 square feet and can host about 650 seated guests. Trump expressed excitement over the project on social media, stating, “I am pleased to announce that we have broken ground on the White House grounds to build a new, large and beautiful White House Ballroom.” He also mentioned that the East Wing has been completely modernized, promising it will look stunning once finished.

Meanwhile, amid social media buzz about the construction, Clinton quickly responded, urging voters to oppose Trump’s project. “This is not his home,” she declared on Tuesday. “It’s your home and he’s destroying it.”

Her post included a screenshot from a Washington Post article that reported on the ongoing demolition of the East Wing facade for the ballroom project.

Critics of Clinton pointed out past scandals, including her husband’s infamy for the sex scandal involving an intern and the controversy over using the Lincoln Bedroom for donor stays. Bill Clinton had faced intense scrutiny during the ’90s for allowing donors to stay in the White House for campaign contributions, though he denied any wrongdoing.

One conservative writer remarked, “Well, between selling nights in Lincoln’s bedroom to donors and her husband mentoring interns in the Oval Office, if anyone treated the White House as sacred, it was the Clintons.” Eric Trump also chimed in, saying the ballroom would be exceptional, unlike the criticisms aimed at Clinton’s past decisions.

Not everyone agreed with Clinton’s stance, as some brought up the Clintons’ history regarding White House furnishings. Conservative influencers reminded her of the $28,000 worth of furniture taken during her husband’s tenure. “Aren’t you the one who took $28,000 in White House furniture when he left?” one user hinted.

The ongoing renovations at the White House, including placement of two large American flags and a revamp of the Rose Garden, are a part of Trump’s continuous effort to improve the historic building. According to the White House Press Secretary, these upgrades do not come at the expense of taxpayers and are hoped to benefit future generations of Americans.

A request for comment from Hillary Clinton’s office went unanswered as the discussion continues to unfold.
