President Donald Trump
I posted a prayer to social media On Sunday, he asked St. Michael for help in fighting “the wickedness and snares of the devil.” Days earlier, he returned to Butler, Pennsylvania, where a Democratic donor shot and killed him in July, killing the heroic patriarch of the Comperatore family.
The prayer of St. Michael defeating Satan and the accompanying statue;
Reposted According to the Trump campaign, it was generally well received. Michael is recognized as an archangel in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and the prayer is simply a request for help in driving away evil.
But many on the left reflexively expressed shock and horror, and in some cases displayed cultural and historical ignorance — just as they responded to Trump's wish for a happy birthday on the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary earlier this year. This is exactly what Ana Navarro on “The View” did. month.
Former Secretary of Labor Clinton
harris booster Robert Reich led the charge by ignoring, or at least overlooking, the fact that the post coincided with Michaelmas, the feast day of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, which Catholics celebrate. almost 1.4 billion worldwide, at least That includes 52 million people in the state, including President Trump's wife Melania, as well as Lutherans and Episcopalians.
“Throw Satan into hell by the power of God.”
“President Trump is increasingly suggesting that he is God's chosen instrument of wrath and that his opponents are 'evil spirits' who should be 'thrown into hell.'”
tweeted Reich's fellow Democrats helped set the stage for two known assassination attempts with their inflammatory rhetoric. “If you don't find this scary, you're not paying attention.”
Reich, now a professor of public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, apparently found this prayer frightening.
Saint Michael the Archangel, protect us in battle. Protect us from the evils and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and O Prince of hosts in heaven, you, by the power of God, will destroy Satan and all the evil spirits that roam the world seeking the destruction of souls. Please throw me into hell. Amen.
This prayer was written by Pope Leo XIII on October 13, 1884, after a vision in which the devil attacked the church from within and an archangel threw the attacking devil back into the abyss.
The song was read after Mass for a long time, but its obligation ended in 1965.
But when Pope John Paul II discussed preparing for spiritual warfare 13 years after he was wounded in an assassination attempt,
said“Although today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of the Eucharist, we invite you to remember it and say it for help in the fight against the forces of darkness and the spirits of this world. ”
According to In 1929, Pope Pius XI ordered the Diocese of Gary, Indiana to read a prayer for the conversion of Russia.
“But the sword of Michael from the armory of God was forged in him, that neither the sharp nor the steadfast could withstand its edge.”
St. Michael is one of three angels mentioned by name in scripture and is considered by several Christian denominations to be the patron saint of police, firefighters, and soldiers. Michael is also the patron saint of many countries and cities, including Kiev, Ukraine.
EWTN
shown Michael is mentioned in chapter 2 of the Old Testament (Book of Daniel) 10:13, 21 and 12:1) and in at least two books of the New Testament (Jude 1:9 and Revelation 12:7).
Revelation 12:7-9
state:
And there was a war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon. And the dragon fought against the angels, but could not win. Their place could no longer be found in heaven. And that great dragon called Satan, the devil who deceives the whole world, was cast out. He was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
This prayer, which Reich found horrifying, not only has religious significance, but also involves an important figure in the Western literary canon.
In John Milton's Paradise Lost, Book 6, St. Michael
I will introduce Lucifer is proud and rebellious against something called pain.

Robert Reich's worrying post was slammed in a community note about X that not only highlighted some of this context, but was also ridiculed.
“Robert, you're completely delusional.”
Aaron McIntyrepodcast host and columnist for Blaze Media; answered“Public expressions of Christianity are now interpreted as a threat to our ruling order.”
Conservative commentator Michael Knowles
noticed“Today is Michaelmas, which Christians have celebrated for about 1,500 years. This particular prayer, composed by Pope Leo The religious and historical ignorance of the elites is on record. High pitched. ”
Seamus Coughlin from Freedom Toons I wrote, “Leo XIII: Write a prayer to drive out demons[.] Professor Marxist: This prayer is terrifying. ”
“This is one of the most popular prayers in the Catholic faith and is in no way meant to suggest that President Trump claims to be God's 'chosen instrument of wrath.'
tweeted Conservative film director Robbie Starbuck. “Robert, you're completely delusional.”
Reich admitted He said the elections in March will test “individual and collective capacity.” In the months since then, he seems to have reached a breaking point with his blog. blamed President Trump was apparently involved in two assassination attempts against him by Democrats.
“We are not afraid.”
Reich wasn't the only one to express displeasure with Trump's prayer post.
New Atheist Writer James Lindsay
I wrote “It's very unfortunate that Mr. Trump got into this, probably based on bad advice.”
Lindsay claims that although he was raised Catholic, he has virtually no experience with Michaelmas, and that “the left has used this to characterize Trump as a religious warlord type, the worst motif of Christian nationalism operations.” This is probably because there is a dialectic between the left and the right.” In the operation, we will all be forced to take sides or put ourselves in a position of irrelevance. ”
Lindsey similarly came across several notes that suggested that projection may have been an influence as well.
The prayer post may have been part of a broader strategy to appeal to American Catholics, who have turned on Kamala Harris for their faith and beliefs, but President Trump on July 13 Since coming to terms with his death, he seems to have adopted a more prayerful outlook.
“Only God has prevented the unthinkable from happening. We will not be afraid, but rather we will be resilient in faith and remain defiant in the face of evil,” he said.
I wrote July 14th.
