Former President Bill Clinton reached out to congratulate Abigail Spanberger, the newly elected Governor of Virginia, after her swift victory that shifted the state from Republican to Democratic.
“Congratulations, Abigail. @SpanbergerForVA on your election as Governor! Your win showcases your dedication and focus on the issues that truly matter to Virginians,” he stated on social media. Check it out here.
He went on to express, “I look forward to following in your footsteps.”
Spanberger’s campaign received a significant boost from former President Barack Obama, who featured in two advertisements endorsing her candidacy.
“We need leaders who speak the truth, tackle tough issues with responsibility, and unify rather than divide,” Obama said. He emphasized the need for representatives who serve their constituents over corporate interests during his message to voters. Watch the meeting here.
“Virginia needs leaders like Abigail Spanberger,” he concluded.
Reports indicate that House Democrats enjoyed a lead of more than eight points among voters compared to their Republican opponent, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears. Find the details here.
During her victory celebration in Richmond, Spanberger reflected, “Our Founders knew what they were doing when they named Virginia a Commonwealth. It signifies that our governance is rooted in the collective power of the people, not in political factions or monarchies. Tonight, Virginia reaffirmed that ideal.”
She added, “Our strength lies in our commonalities, not our differences, and I’m proud that our campaign attracted support from Democrats, Republicans, independents, and everyone in between.”
“That’s the Virginia I cherish. That’s the Virginia I respect. That’s the Virginia I’m proud to represent,” Spanberger remarked.
