Clyburn Defends Jeffries Amid Criticism from Progressives

During a segment on CNN’s “The Arena,” Representative James Clyburn (D-SC) addressed criticisms directed at House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) from some progressive members of the party. Clyburn asserted that, in his view, “most of these people who are criticizing have never done anything” in the political arena.

Host Kasie Hunt raised the issue of the political dynamics within the party, especially as the midterm elections could elevate Jeffries to the position of Speaker of the House. She pointed out the ongoing tensions between progressive and pragmatist factions, noting that some progressives have recently voiced significant discontent towards Jeffries. Hunt asked if Clyburn believed that Jeffries was achieving a fair balance among these party factions.

Clyburn responded by emphasizing the successes the party has experienced. He mentioned the impressive number of special elections won in the past year, along with record-breaking efforts in getting discharge petitions to the House floor. He reflected on his own political journey, recalling that he faced criticism for his progressive views in South Carolina, stating, “You show me a person who’s never been criticized, and I will show you one who’s never done anything.” Clyburn reiterated that Jeffries is effectively leading the caucus, which is resulting in legislative successes and favorable election outcomes. He acknowledged the nature of primary challenges, suggesting that competing interests should be allowed to contest until a winner is determined, emphasizing the importance of party unity post-primary. Clyburn concluded by reaffirming his confidence in Jeffries’ capabilities, saying, “The proof is in the pudding.”
