Claims About White House Renovations Spark Controversy
Texas Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett has made some controversial assertions regarding the ongoing renovations in the East Wing of the White House, prompting even CNN to step in for a fact-check.
Crockett accused President Donald Trump of neglecting the needs of the American populace during the government shutdown, suggesting that the construction of a new ballroom in the East Wing was the president’s “top priority.” CNN anchor Caitlan Collins provided clarification on the issue, explaining that the comments from press secretary Caroline Leavitt were misconstrued.
Interestingly, Crockett’s comments are not isolated. Other prominent Democratic figures have also expressed misleading views about the White House banquet hall.
In response to Collins, Crockett stated, “I don’t know.” She continued, “You were discussing how the president is occupied in Japan. He has time for things that aren’t his main responsibilities.”
She further claimed, “We heard the press secretary say that the ballroom is a priority—an unnecessary one that involves damaging historic sections of the White House.”
Collins explained that Levitt’s remarks pertained to inquiries about other renovations, not an overall list of presidential priorities.
Continuing this line of thought, it was mentioned that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, once a vice presidential candidate, echoed the notion that the ballroom project is a top concern for Trump and implied that it was taxpayer-funded.
However, Levitt clarified that the renovation is being funded entirely by private contributions, with Trump himself contributing to the project. “He’s a builder at heart,” Levitt remarked, explaining that the president is constantly thinking about improvement projects on the White House grounds. Right now, she confirmed, the banquet hall is indeed Trump’s primary focus.
