Jill Biden Faces Backlash Over Debate Comments
Former First Lady Jill Biden received criticism on Wednesday after revealing in an interview that she believed her husband, former President Joe Biden, might have suffered a stroke during a pivotal debate in the 2024 election. CNN’s Abby Phillip was among those expressing concerns about deception within the Democratic Party regarding this issue.
Phillip commented, “I’m thankful for the honesty she’s shown, but we really need to discuss the deceit involved. It’s troubling to think about a political system that could cover up such significant information. What does it say when they’re willing to lie about something obvious?”
During an interview with CBS News, Jill Biden described her reaction while watching the debate, stating she was “horrified” and felt that her husband looked unlike himself. “I was terrified,” she admitted, recalling her initial thought that he might be having a stroke.
However, shortly afterwards, Jill praised Joe’s performance in front of supporters, an action that some say triggered panic among Democratic leaders, ultimately leading to his departure from the race. Vice President Kamala Harris subsequently became the Democratic nominee.
Phillip also mentioned a report by the Wall Street Journal regarding Joe Biden’s health, which drew sharp criticism from the White House at that time.
Podcast host Kumele Foster raised another point, questioning why the follow-up in the interview wouldn’t address why she chose to mislead the public back then. “The next question should be about the reasons behind the initial untruth,” he remarked. “I can’t help but feel it’s a failure of our industry if that question isn’t asked.”
Meanwhile, Biden is set to release a new memoir, “The View from the East Tower,” on June 2, where he may delve into some contentious moments from his presidency.
Critics have pointed out perceived inconsistencies in Jill’s statements, particularly her comments immediately after the debate. Conservative commentator Kevin Dalton noted, “It’s funny how she seemed unfazed right after the debate.” He added that her post-debate praise for Joe appeared at odds with her earlier claims of concern.
Other critics like New York Post columnist Miranda Devine voiced strong disapproval, arguing that if she was genuinely worried, she should have insisted he get medical help instead of celebrating his performance.
In reactions across the board, some have portrayed Jill Biden’s comments as duplicitous, raising questions on the integrity of their responses during a tense period for the Democratic Party.
