At least one indicator seems to suggest that a Democratic campaign calling the Republican vice presidential nominee, Senator J.D. Vance, a “nutjob,” is hurting his favorability.
CNN polling analyst Harry Enten said an analysis of Google search terms showed a surge in interest in the word “weird” in recent weeks.
“They are fixated on a message and are going to sell it even if it’s fake.”
According to Enten, Google search That’s because usage of the word “weird” increased by 32% in the three days prior to August 2nd and 22% in the week prior to the same date.
Not only did searches for weird increase, but other words searched alongside weird included “JD Vance,” “MAGA,” and “GOP,” according to the analysis.
Enten pointed to two polls showing Vance’s approval rating has fallen by 13 percentage points in the Associated Press-NORC poll and 15 percentage points in the ABC-Ipsos poll compared to his approval rating in mid-July.
“The attacks on J.D. Vance seem to be working, and of course one of the big attacks is the idea that he’s a weirdo,” Enten said.
He added that these numbers were particularly bad for Vance compared with past vice presidential nominees such as Sarah Palin.
Vance responded to the “bizarre” campaign by hitting back at the attackers.
“People who call me weird because they want to put a 9-year-old on hormone therapy or sterilize him are way weirder than me living a normal life with my kids and my wife,” Vance said on the Full Send Podcast.
“But I think what they’re doing is sticking to a message and trying to sell it, even if it’s fake,” he added.
