CNN Correspondent Alex Marquardt Leaves Network Amid Controversy

In the midst of an unsettling report alleging that it costs at least $5 million to defame US Navy veterans, CNN is seeing correspondents depart from the beleaguered network.

National security correspondent Alex Marquardt found himself in hot water earlier this year after a ruling in Florida involving Zachary Young, who claimed Marquardt had illegally exploited Afghan nationals during the chaotic withdrawal under the Biden administration in 2021.

Former CNN Media Correspondent Oliver Darcy mentioned that Marquardt’s departure was influenced by “editorial differences” with his superiors.

Having spent eight years at CNN, Marquardt had recently been focusing on the coverage of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, he did not specify the reasons for his exit, which he announced on Monday.

Marquardt shared on social media, “It’s hard to say goodbye, but it was an honor to work in the best job in the business.”

He expressed gratitude towards his colleagues on the National Security Team, acknowledging the support he received from teammates both domestically and internationally.

CNN opted not to comment on the matter.

In a notable legal ruling, a Florida judge awarded $5 million to Young after a brief deliberation following a two-week trial, highlighting the serious implications of the case.

A private settlement was reached before the court could assess any punitive damages, further intensifying criticisms from figures like former President Trump, who has claimed CNN exhibits bias.

During the trial, it became evident that the network had dismissed key evidence supporting Young’s case.

Marquardt reportedly expressed strong feelings about the situation, referring to Young in unflattering terms during communications with colleagues.

The contentious report aired on Jake Tapper’s program “The Lead,” discussing the evacuation of US personnel while shedding light on the grim circumstances faced by Afghans trying to leave the country amid a perilous black market.

Marquardt highlighted a distressing scenario of a man in the US trying to evacuate his family in Afghanistan, revealing that some were charging exorbitant fees for their services.

“Afghans and activists we spoke to have said that hopeless Afghans are currently being exploited,” Marquardt stated during his coverage.

Despite the legal challenges, CNN stood by Marquardt, expressing pride in their journalists and their commitment to robust reporting while acknowledging the lessons learned from the case.

Before his tenure at CNN, Marquardt worked as a foreign correspondent for ABC News, covering major stories from various international locations, and has won several prestigious awards, including an Emmy and an Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative work on child trafficking in the Philippines.
