CNN anchor Jake Tapper describes the cold greetings exchanged between President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and their spouses at former President Jimmy Carter's funeral at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. I couldn't help but notice the words.
During CNN's live broadcast of the funeral, Tapper said there was “no particularly warm greeting” between the Bidens and Harris, who was accompanied by her husband, Second Class Doug Emhoff.
Cameras watched the president and first lady make their way to the front seats where Harris and Emhoff were waiting.
The first lady took a seat next to Harris and did not greet or look at the vice president and second gentleman.
The president, who was sitting in an aisle seat, didn't seem to make eye contact with the Emhoffs as he sat.
Immediately after the four people took their seats, the memorial service began, and all of them had expressionless faces.
Tapper noted that the solemn event may explain why there was no greeting between the two couples, but recent reports suggest the post-election downward spiral is deepening. It has been shown that
“We have President Joe Biden and First Lady Joe Biden. And I think he has 11 days left as president of the United States. It's obviously been a tumultuous year, a year that he didn't plan for.” said Tapper. His comment is Mediaite reported.
A similar scenario played out last month at the 47th Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony, where the Bidens did not greet or greet Harris as she entered the Washington, D.C. venue to a standing ovation.
A few days after the election, at a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, the first lady appeared to give Harris the cold shoulder.
Tapper noted that President Biden “started the year as the Democratic presidential nominee, and we all know what happened after that.”
Biden was kicked out of the race by Democratic establishment figures following a disastrous debate performance in late June in which he appeared unable to form coherent sentences and appeared frail and forgetful.
Harris took office as the party's nominee and initially energized Democratic voters. However, she stalled in the second half of the race.
“Again, I didn't see any particularly warm greetings between the first couple and the second couple. But again, we're at a funeral, so we're there. “You have to take that into account when you're trying to read people's body language,” Tapper said.
The newspaper has contacted the White House for comment.
a Published in the Wall Street Journal on December 30th He quoted White House insiders as saying the relationship between Mr. Biden and Mr. Emhoff was “frozen” following the disastrous Nov. 5 election that President-elect Donald Trump won by a landslide.
The newspaper said the first lady was never particularly enamored with Harris. Especially since the vice president harshly criticized her husband for opposing busing policies during the 2020 Democratic primary, when both men were vying for the nomination.
The newspaper said Harris' aides suggested that Biden had stayed in the race too long and should have left sooner to give the vice president more time to prepare his campaign.
The president has reportedly been adamant, contradicting the widely held view among Democrats that he would have defeated Trump had he stayed in the race.
White House representatives denied there was any rift between the first and second couple.
White House press secretary Andrew Bates told the magazine that Biden and Harris are committed to “completing the most groundbreaking record of any modern administration while delivering as many additional outcomes for hardworking families as possible.” We're focusing on that,” he said.
Bates added that Biden is not “spending his time re-discussing the election or engaging in counterfactuals.”
