CNN anchor Abby Phillip expressed surprise Thursday that the political group No Labels spent tens of millions of dollars trying to recruit a third-party presidential campaign, but it never materialized.
“Even if they find the right personality, where is this going to go?” asked Republican strategist Lina Shah on Mr. Phillip’s prime-time CNN show. “I wasn’t really surprised that it crashed and burst into flames,” she said.
“So $70 million was just set on fire in the dumpster,” Phillippe jokingly asked Rolling Stone columnist Jay Michaelson, another guest on the show. “Where is this money going now?”
No Labels announced Thursday that it is abandoning its efforts to field candidates to challenge President Biden and former President Trump in this fall’s presidential election.
“No Labels has always said we will only offer a ticket on the ballot if we can identify a candidate with a credible path to winning the White House,” the group said in announcing the decision. Stated. “No such candidate has emerged, so the responsible action for us to take is to resign.”
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is also running as an independent for president, and the Green Party and Libertarian Party are also expected to field candidates.
No Labels tried to persuade former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to join, but ultimately failed.
