CNN commentator Van Jones said on CNN’s “Newsroom” on Thursday that next week’s debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is “the election itself.”
“Biden has two disadvantages: One, they don’t have any momentum, and he has a full-time job. All Trump has to do is prepare for court, not fall asleep, go out and say nasty things about Biden, even though he has a full-time job that is as demanding as the presidency,” Jones said.
“How important a moment is this for the president? I’ve talked to people on the Biden team and Democrats, and they say this is a very important moment for the president,” host Jim Acosta said.
“To me, this is the entire election. The whole world will be watching. If you’re a carbon-based life form, you’ll be watching. If you have a functioning brain stem, you’ll be watching. If Biden flops, it’s game over. If he goes on the campaign trail and a week later his approval ratings are down, there will be panic in the party. But if he goes on the campaign trail and can take on Donald Trump, the runaway train, the locomotive, the runaway bull, he deserves another chance to be president, because it’s going to be a tough fight,” Jones said.
Jones added, “This is like the entire presidency rolled into a week.”
