Whoopi Goldberg, alongside her co-host on “The View,” spoke out during Monday’s episode about Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, criticizing ABC’s decision and underscoring the potential influence of government pressure.
“Did you really think we wouldn’t discuss Jimmy Kimmel? Have you watched this show over its 29 seasons?” Goldberg challenged the audience at the start of the show.
“No one will silence us,” she asserted.
Goldberg emphasized that they were waiting to see how Kimmel would respond first, adding, “the government shouldn’t be able to pressure anyone into silence.”
Her co-host, Ana Navarro, expressed concern over how the government might misuse its power to intimidate and silence individuals.
“The First Amendment is crucial because it holds power accountable,” remarked Alyssafara Griffin, another panelist.
Goldberg stated their commitment to defending freedom of speech, saying, “We’re fighting for the right to speak freely because that’s what it means to be free.”
Their comments came amid speculation that ABC instructed the daytime hosts to avoid the controversy. Observers noted that Kimmel’s suspension was announced on September 18, followed by two episodes that skipped the topic entirely.
The tension escalated after FCC Chairman Brendan Kerr suggested on a radio show that the “View” might be worth reviewing in light of Kimmel’s suspension, questioning if it met the criteria for being an “authorized news program.”

Other television personalities have condemned Kimmel’s suspension. Stephen Colbert called it “blatant censorship” designed to please President Donald Trump. Jimmy Fallon expressed his desire to see Kimmel return, pledging to keep joking about Trump, even if it risks censorship.
David Letterman labeled it “managed media,” criticizing the action as “silly,” claiming Kimmel was punished for opposing an “authoritarian administration.”
Protests are reportedly planned outside an ABC affiliate office in Seattle on September 20, with demands for a boycott of Disney following Kimmel’s suspension.
Howard Stern reacted by cancelling his Disney+ subscription in protest, stating, “When the government expresses dissatisfaction and seeks to stifle voices, it’s a troubling signal for our country.”
In an email, White House spokesman Stephen Chen criticized Kimmel, saying, “Jimmy Kimmel is a silent loser who’s driving his ratings down with lies.” Kimmel has been off air since September 18, and ABC has yet to announce when he might return.
Chen also dismissed “The View,” describing it as lacking real talent and suggesting nobody would watch it unless there were other entertaining events attached.
An ABC spokesperson referenced Goldberg’s comments as the discussion continued.
This post is awaiting responses from Disney, the FCC, and the White House.
