Coach of opposing team describes Titans as historically poor as chaos surrounds struggling team

Titans’ Struggles Highlighted by Raiders Coach

Cam Ward recently labeled the Titans as “terrible,” but after witnessing their performance last Sunday, a Raiders coach took it a step further, commenting, “That might be the worst team I’ve seen in the last 25 years.” It’s a strong indictment, but still, quite a few teams might contest that title—historically, teams like the 2025 Jets or the 2008 Lions might have something to say about it.

One pressing observation is that the Titans seem to be a complete mess. Following a lackluster start of 1-5, Brian Callahan, the head coach, was the first casualty of the season, getting fired on Monday.

Ward, the top draft pick, has struggled to make an impact. In fact, some might argue he hasn’t transformed the franchise as expected, throwing just three touchdowns against four interceptions. In an interview before the Titans’ 20-10 defeat against the Raiders, he gave himself an “F” grade for his performance.

Statistically, the Titans are at the bottom, ranking last in yards per game and second to last in points scored. Even their defense, though historically a strength, is allowing a significant number of points and rushing yards per game.

Things have become so dismal that standout defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons criticized the Raiders’ practice ahead of their game, breaking the usual script that emphasizes a great week of training after a loss. Simmons remarked, “This was probably one of the worst weeks of practice we’ve had.” It’s almost ironic, isn’t it? Practice is supposed to set the tone, yet here they were.

Now, interim coach Mike McCoy has the daunting task of trying to steer a ship that’s nearly sunk, with hopes of paving a way for a new coach next season. Meanwhile, Chad Brinker, the team’s President of Football Operations, emphasized that the organization’s decision to part ways with Callahan was due, in part, to the lack of development from players like Ward.

If the Titans can manage to show even a hint of improvement, it might signal a significant change from their current dire situation on the field.

Brinker noted, “We need to see more from our players, we need to see more from our coaches, and we need to get better.” He’s right, I think; there are high standards to uphold, and it’s clear the team hasn’t been measuring up lately.
