Colorado Football Begins Strong Under Coach Dion Sanders
The third season of Colorado football, led by head coach Dion Sanders, kicked off on a promising note this past Friday in Boulder. The Buffaloes’ defense made a significant impact early, recovering two fumbles and intercepting Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King in the first quarter.
However, much of the attention before the game was centered around Sanders’ health. Back in July, he revealed that doctors had removed his bladder due to a tumor but mentioned there has been no sign of cancer following the surgery.
Coach Sanders made his return to the sidelines on Friday, although he might still need some privacy regarding his recovery.
Interestingly, Folsom Field now features a mobile restroom located near the Buffalo bench, alongside portable privacy tents from the adult underwear brand Depend, which Sanders endorses.
In his own words, Sanders expressed his approach to his health, stating, “I wasn’t kidding! I’m really dependent on you. I’m not ashamed of taking care of myself.” He shared this sentiment on social media last week.
Despite his recent health concerns, questions lingered about his ability to coach effectively. However, during a timeout in the second quarter, he seemed energized, interacting animatedly with both coaches and players.
In a past discussion with Super Bowl champion Michael Irvin, Sanders humorously noted his need for assistance during games, pondering aloud about the challenges he might face during longer quarters.
As he navigates his first season without his sons, Chedur and Shiro, who are pursuing their own professional careers, Sanders carries the weight of expectations following a nine-win season last year. Colorado had struggled at 4-8 during his inaugural year.
The game against Georgia Tech concluded with the score tied at 20-20 in the fourth quarter, with quarterback Kaidon Salter making a promising start by completing six of his first eleven passes and throwing for a touchdown.
