Coco Gauff Changes Coaching Team Ahead of US Open
American tennis player Coco Gauff has decided to split from coaches Matt Daly and J.C. Faurell. In their place, she has brought on biomechanics specialist Gavin McMillan.
The 21-year-old has faced challenges with her serve since her early exit from Wimbledon last month, and this coaching transition comes just days before her opening match at the US Open.
McMillan is known for his work with top players, including world number one Aryna Sabalenka, focusing on serving techniques. He also established a Sports Science Lab that emphasizes sports performance, physical rehabilitation, and general fitness.
On Wednesday morning, Gauff was observed training with Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“There are many elements that could lead to a really good partnership,” ESPN quoted Darren Cahill saying regarding McMillan. “He’s very meticulous… I’ve talked to him numerous times. His experience across various athletes and sports, combined with his use of cutting-edge technology and video analysis, stands out.”
This change in Gauff’s coaching strategy follows a year where her serving has been inconsistent.
In the Cincinnati Open, she faced a tough match against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, ultimately losing in straight sets, which included a staggering 62 forced errors.
Last year, she parted ways with coach Brad Gilbert following a disappointing performance at the US Open, where she couldn’t defend her title from 2023.
However, Gauff did achieve a significant milestone earlier this year by winning the French Open in May.
