MELBOURNE, Australia — Coco Gauff defeated Marta Kostyuk 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3), 6-2 in a mistake-filled match to book a spot in the Australian Open semifinals on Tuesday.
Fourth-placed Gauff fought off two set points, coming from a 5-1 deficit to take the first set in a tiebreaker, but was forced into the final set and snatched the victory after 3 hours and 8 minutes.
Gauff made 51 unforced errors, nine double faults and only 17 winners, but survived to set up a semifinal matchup with either defending champion Aryna Sabalenka or ninth-placed Barbora Krejcikova. .
The American has won 12 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments since winning the US Open last September.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will then face Taylor Fritz for a spot in the semi-finals.
