While Ostien navigated through the gathered robots, she described the scene as a bit chaotic. She remarked that anyone with limited mobility would face significant challenges in getting through the area. One observer even referred to the situation as “an actual nightmare” for those with disabilities.

Coco Robotics has acknowledged the incident, attributing it to a “sidewalk deployment error” where multiple robots tried to reroute simultaneously while leaving their station. They expressed regret about the disruption this caused, emphasizing that this is not how their robots are intended to operate. The company quickly rectified the issue, enabling the robots to return to their normal routes within minutes.

According to Coco, they have since resolved the underlying programming issue that resulted in this mess and have implemented additional safeguards to prevent its recurrence. They stated that such incidents are rare and pointed out that their robots have successfully completed tens of thousands of deliveries in Chicago over the last two years, benefiting consumers significantly.

However, the Chicago incident highlights the inherent challenge: the robots must not become additional barriers on sidewalks. As these fleets grow, ensuring reliability and preventing deployment failures will be critical.
