Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Shares That He Turns to David Goggins for Inspiration When Times Are Tough

Coinbase CEO Shares Morning Motivation Tips

Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase, recently opened up about how he tackles those tough morning moments on his podcast, “When The Shift Happens.” He mentioned that sometimes, mornings can feel particularly daunting. In such instances, he turns to YouTube, searching for videos by David Goggins, a well-known figure for promoting resilience and facing challenges head-on.

“Sometimes you wake up in the morning and everything sucks,” Armstrong reflected. It’s interesting how even someone in his position feels that way, right? He highlighted Goggins’ videos, recommending them as a source of motivation. “He talks about bad attitudes—like, just stop the negativity and get going,” Armstrong noted. His approach is pretty straightforward: if you’re looking for that morning boost, Goggins is a solid option.

Goggins has amassed a significant following by advocating for personal growth through embracing discomfort. His life story is pretty compelling, too; he transitioned from being an overweight exterminator to a Navy SEAL and an accomplished athlete. He’s even tackled 70 ultramarathons and once held the record for the most pull-ups in 24 hours. Quite a journey, right?

Aside from Goggins, Armstrong emphasized the importance of physical activity, spending time outdoors, and connecting with loved ones to stave off burnout. He mentioned, “You’ll probably feel better in 48 hours. It’s not the end of the world.” It’s nice to hear such encouraging words. He has seen some peers struggle with burnout, noting that many couldn’t sustain their efforts. “They either gained or lost a lot of weight; it was tough for them,” he said.

However, Armstrong candidly recognized that maintaining motivation is challenging. “Easier said than done,” he admitted, elaborating that he has tried to be more disciplined regarding sleep, exercise, and nutrition. “I think it helps, but there are still days I wake up feeling off. Those are the times I really need to tune into David Goggins.” It’s relatable, isn’t it? Even the CEO of a major company has those moments.

Armstrong co-founded Coinbase in 2012, and the platform has grown tremendously since then. More than a decade later, it stands as the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S. by trading volume, with a market cap of $64.8 billion. They’ve weathered quite a bit in the crypto landscape, navigating some tricky regulatory challenges along the way.
