Colbert challenges Jean-Pierre on Biden's mental sharpness and Democratic disloyalty

Colbert and Jean-Pierre Clash Over Biden’s Mental Health

On Monday, Stephen Colbert engaged in a heated exchange with former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre regarding concerns over President Joe Biden’s mental health and accusations of betrayal from within his own party.

Colbert reflected on his personal experience, stating, “Seeing this was a shock. Just months earlier, I had raised $25 million for him, and then at a charity event, he appeared to be a completely different person. At 81, I suppose it’s not entirely surprising, but it raised concerns.”

In response, Jean-Pierre asserted that she met with Biden daily and believed he was still fit to lead. She expressed her frustration with the Democratic Party, suggesting in her recent book that she feels detached from them after Biden was essentially pushed out of the race.

“It’s not about questioning his intentions or policies,” she explained. “But to lead the country, you need more than that. Under pressure, he showed moments that made us all uneasy.” She rejected the idea that they were presenting a false image of Biden, emphasizing, “That wasn’t the Joe Biden seen by others.”

Later, Colbert countered her statements. He described Biden’s performance during the June 2024 debate as “miserable” while admitting they wouldn’t see eye-to-eye on it.

During an interview with CBS, Jean-Pierre maintained that Biden is wise and capable, but skeptics lingered. CBS hosts Tony Dokoupil and Gayle King pressed her, questioning how she could claim no decline when she traveled with him.

Dokoupil remarked that readers might wonder about her perspective, implying some might not fully buy her assurances about Biden’s fitness. King added, “You mentioned you were even on the plane with him, so how could you say there were no signs of decline?”

The discussion highlighted the ongoing debate about Biden’s capacity to govern and the mixed feelings within his own party regarding his future.
