Colbert Advocates for Citizenship for Immigrants in Late-Night Interview

During a recent episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Colbert expressed his hopes that senators will successfully work towards providing citizenship for undocumented immigrants. He mentioned the “cruelty and atrocities” of the Trump administration in this context.

Senator Alex Padilla appeared on the show, discussing his bill known as the “Registry Update.” This legislation aims to grant citizenship to those who have lived in the U.S. for many years, paid taxes, and contributed positively to their communities. He emphasized that many of these individuals don’t have criminal histories and have complied with the law.

“These millions, who often get overlooked in conversations, are not just a number. They have lived here, in some cases, for decades,” Padilla stated.

Padilla was taken into custody back in June after trying to interrupt a press conference held by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. He, of course, framed his actions as a necessary step towards advocating for the rights of immigrants.

Colbert supported Padilla’s initiative, noting that the “Registry Update” bill was last updated under President Ronald Reagan. He remarked on the long history of such legislation, asserting its importance and relevance even after a century of stagnation.

“I think they deserve a way out of the shadows and a chance for legal status,” Colbert added. He expressed sadness over the current administration’s policies, noting how they often conflict with the values of love and compassion that many hold for their country.

Reflecting on Padilla’s experience at the press conference, Colbert pointed out that it took multiple officers to escort him away, a moment that underscores the tense atmosphere surrounding immigration discussions today.

“I identified myself. I don’t see why there was a need for that,” Padilla remarked. He recounted feeling it was his duty as a senator to seek answers, particularly regarding policies that affect many families in his constituency.
