Cole Hauser believes Rip Wheeler represents traditional American masculinity.

Cole Hauser Offers Insights on ‘Dutton Ranch’ Challenges

Cole Hauser is sharing some behind-the-scenes details about ‘Dutton Ranch,’ and it seems there have been quite a few hurdles along the way.

The actor, who portrays the beloved Rip Wheeler in the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff, acknowledged that the cast encountered difficulties, especially after series creator Taylor Sheridan departed from the writers’ room during the show’s first season.

“There were challenges, right?” Hauser remarked. “Without Taylor there, I got to really work with new writers and directors; everything changed.”

Ed Harris Expresses Frustration Over His Role

“The only…normality we had was Carter,” he noted, mentioning fellow cast members.

‘Dutton Ranch,’ which just wrapped its first season, marks the first installment in the ‘Yellowstone’ series not scripted by Sheridan. While he remained involved as an executive producer, the daily creative responsibilities shifted to showrunner Chad Feehan and a new writing team.

Hauser didn’t find the transition easy. “I enjoy a challenge, and this was certainly one,” he shared. “We worked hard this year, and we didn’t really dwell on the noise outside and the pressures that come with it. It was very clear to me during that time.”

Rather than getting bogged down by expectations, Hauser said the cast focused on adapting to a different creative environment.

He reflected, “It was about putting our heads down and working on it. The new writers pushed us to figure out our performances and how to drive the story. I’m proud of what we achieved and I’m eager for what comes next.”

Harris, meanwhile, has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with his character, Everett McKinney. He previously mentioned feeling misunderstood and even contemplated leaving the show midway through the first season. Harris felt he was misled into believing his character would have a more prominent role, which didn’t materialize as expected. He expressed it like this: “Before I signed on, we discussed a lot about what my character would do. I was supposedly going to be one of the four main characters, but that’s not how it turned out.”

Despite these frustrations, Harris was told that his role would be expanded in the upcoming season, which is set to begin filming in February. “It’s a bit frustrating, to be honest,” he admitted, alluding to the promises that had been made to him.
