Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said in an interview Sunday that Republicans should “work with President-elect Trump to try to achieve his goals.”
“As we record this, it looks like the Republican majority in the 119th Congress will be about the same size as the current Congress — 222, maybe 221 — but…in the same space,” NewsNation said. Chris Stilwald said. The Hill Sunday. ”
“The small majority will have a tough job,” Stirewald continued. “What would you say to your fellow Republicans about navigating these areas?”
“First of all, you say you have a majority because of President Trump,” Cole said. “Look, he won the popular vote…It's the first time in 20 years that a Republican has been able to do that. So we need to work with him to achieve his objectives. .”
Republicans will hold the presidency and a majority in both houses of Congress next year. The election results mirror those from nearly four years ago, when Democrats won the presidency and also won the House and Senate.
“I think this Congress is a little different, just because we're a little more disciplined,” Cole said in an interview with NewsNation. “You know, President Trump is not shy about voicing his opinions. I think all of my members have a very healthy respect for him.”
This year's Republican victory in the House is a victory for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), who has led House Republicans through a tumultuous period for more than a year. Mr. Johnson has overseen difficult times for the Republican conference in the House, including the period following the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and heated debates over foreign aid.
Trump's return to the White House, along with a friendly neighbor in the Republican-controlled Senate, could make things easier for House Republicans, who have recently been playing with Democrats who lead the Senate and President Biden. I don't know.
