PJ Haggerty is a breakout sophomore for the Memphis Tigers and was the third-highest scorer in men’s college basketball this past season. Haggerty averaged 21.7 points per game by splashing shots from all three levels and consistently reaching the free throw line. only VillanovaEric Dixon and Northern Arizona’s Trenton McLaughlin averaged more points during the 2024-2025 season.
Haggerty is the latest shocking addition to the transfer portal, entering his name on Thursday afternoon just before the April 22nd deadline. He soon becomes one of the top players available on the portal and may be the best name on the list in terms of players who remain multi-year qualifications.
This is a devastating blow to Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway. Penny Hardaway is away from his best season, 29-6 overall, but failed to win the game in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Hagerty ranked 9th on the list of 50 best players in March Madness. The eight players ranked above him all returned to their original school or have entered the 2025 NBA Draft.
The NBA is a little smaller for scoring guards (6’3, 191 pounds), so they’re not too interested in Hagerty and don’t have much exercise explosion. He finished the season with zero dunks. Still, this is exactly the type of security guard that a great college team needs in March, and as an immediate offensive element that can make dribbling.
Haggerty has been Memphis’ absolute flagship over the past year, finishing ninth in DI in a total of nine minutes and ranked second in both free throw and free throw attempts. He’s not a ton of 3-point shooting games and only attempts three shots from deep per game, but he’s still an efficient scorer due to his ability to reach the foul line. His 58.3% true shooting is above average, and is even more impressive when mixed with his 20% assist rate and 28% use rate.
Haggerty could potentially earn cash on large hours on the portal. Name the university team that needs a starting guard: Haggerty must be your biggest choice. North Carolina has become a serious suitor for Hagerty. St. John’s still needs security guards to target former UNC freshman Ian Jackson. Haggerty could be the first team national of the preseason when he reports to campus for the 2025-2026 season. Players with this level of production, experience and remaining eligible for two years will not appear frequently. Memphis’ losses will likely benefit Blueblood.
