Announcer’s Mistake During Game
Looks like this announcer could use a better pair of glasses.
During the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game between Mississippi and Tennessee, Bulldogs kicker Kyle Ferry attempted a 42-yard field goal but missed it wide to the right. Unfortunately, SEC commentator Dave Neal seemed convinced that Ferry had made the kick.
“And this kick is good,” Neal declared on the SEC broadcast, sounding rather certain of himself.
Even as the ball veered off course, Neal continued to rave about Ferry’s performance, seemingly oblivious to the miss.
“He has some kind of legs,” he said, which, well, didn’t quite match the situation.
Only after a moment did it dawn on Neal that the kick was, in fact, a miss. “Ah, sorry,” he quickly apologized. “He pulled it. The boy is frustrated. His first mistake of the year. It’s 20-17.”
It’s interesting—Ferry had actually hit a 51-yard field goal earlier in the game, making this miss his first of the season. I can’t help but wonder how Neal missed that obvious error.
In the end, Mississippi lost to Tennessee in an overtime thriller, with a final score of 41-34. Tennessee’s quarterback, Joey Aguilar, had a mixed bag of a game, throwing for 335 yards and two touchdowns, but he also dealt with two interceptions, completing 24 of 40 passes.
Aguilar has a notable record, having thrown for over 200 yards in all of his 29 career NCAA starts—a streak that currently leads FBS. Tennessee’s head coach, Josh Heupel, expressed admiration for Aguilar’s demeanor throughout the game, regardless of the ups and downs.
“What I like about Joey is that whether it’s a good play or a bad play, he maintains the same attitude while waiting for the next play,” Heupel noted after the game.
