College Football Saturday Shake-Up
This Saturday was nothing short of chaotic in the world of college football. Not only did several top-ranked teams face unexpected defeats, but there was also a late-game clock controversy that had everyone buzzing. The matchup between BYU and Notre Dame featured a surprising upset, with many on social media speculating that the game might not have concluded as it should have.
With the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs suffering a loss at home against Auburn, No. 2 Notre Dame had a golden opportunity to claim the number one spot with a victory.
However, this would not be an easy feat, as they had to overcome the unbeaten No. 8 BYU Cougars, who have been performing really well in the Big 12. To add to Notre Dame’s troubles, one of their star defensive players was sidelined early in the game. Defensive lineman Boubacar Traore was flagged for targeting on a hit against BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier during BYU’s opening series, and that penalty proved to be quite costly.
Taking advantage of the situation, the Cougars quickly moved down the field, even forcing the Irish to use a timeout. Bachmeier ultimately crossed the goal line, putting BYU on the scoreboard first. Notre Dame managed to respond with a field goal in the first quarter and then took the lead in the second quarter, thanks to a touchdown run by running back Nolan James Jr., making it 10-7 in their favor.
But BYU wasn’t done yet. A clever trick play saw Bachmeier score again, this time with assistance from a blocker. Just before the half, he added another rushing touchdown, giving BYU a commanding 21-10 lead after the extra point.
Despite being down, Notre Dame still had time. With just nine seconds remaining in the half, they found themselves on the Cougars’ 5-yard line. Quarterback CJ Carr attempted to spike the ball, but, in a twist of fate, he lost control. After a review, it was deemed a fumble, resulting in a turnover that left Notre Dame empty-handed before halftime.
As the second half unfolded, Notre Dame fought back, eventually taking a brief lead with a field goal. BYU struck back when Bachmeier threw his first touchdown pass of the night, connecting with tight end Walker Lyons. This crucial score put BYU ahead by four points and made it clear that Notre Dame couldn’t settle for just a field goal.
In a tense moment, the Irish converted a crucial fourth-and-2 to keep their hopes alive. Yet, facing fourth-and-five with ten seconds left and needing to get into the end zone, they managed to convert with only four seconds to go, setting up one last play.
There was some contact on the final attempt, though no flags were thrown, which is bound to frustrate Notre Dame fans. Just as the field was being stormed and both teams were headed to their respective locker rooms, discussions on social media about the end of the game began circulating.
Ultimately, the day ended with BYU disrupting Notre Dame’s impressive 16-game winning streak, and this outcome is sure to shake up the rankings and the College Football Playoff picture considerably.
Notre Dame will have a week off before facing Navy again, while BYU looks ahead to their next challenge against the UCF Knights in Orlando.
