College football Week 8 forecasts: Choices against the spread

Alabama’s football season came to an early end, well before September.

Under Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide faced 128 unranked teams, only losing four times. However, Karen DeBoer, in his second year as head coach, fell to Florida State, marking Alabama’s fourth loss in just ten games against unranked opponents. This defeat ended a 23-year winning streak in opening games for the program.

DeBoer, following the legendary Saban—a nearly impossible act—has struggled despite entering every game as a favorite. He ended the season with a lackluster 6-5 record against power conference teams and lost three of his last four matchups.

When approached by WHNT News 19 outside a gas station, Susie Connally from Guntersville, Alabama, had an immediate answer regarding winning the $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot.

“We’d pay off Karen DeBoer and get him out of the University of Alabama,” Connally stated, also mentioning he would buy out athletic director Greg Byrne, voicing strong opinions about the state of the football program.

A little over a month later, James Franklin, previously the head coach at Penn State, found himself without a job following a massive $49 million buyout, while DeBoer’s team unexpectedly turned around and is now contending for a national championship.

Alabama has recently secured five consecutive wins, with quarterback Ty Simpson emerging as a frontrunner for the Heisman. For now, the pressure on DeBoer has eased, and the turmoil in Tuscaloosa seems to have subsided.

However, at Alabama, disaster could always be just one game away. The Crimson Tide appears to be in a precarious position if they continue taking risks.

They managed a narrow victory against Georgia, although they were shut out in the second half. A tightly contested battle with Vanderbilt ended in barely scraping a win, and they barely claimed victory against Missouri State.

Despite Simpson’s skills and a keen defense, Alabama remains troubled, lacking the foundational strength of Saban’s most successful squads. They currently rank low nationally in both rushing yards gained and allowed, which raises concerns as Tennessee, boasting a strong offense, looms on the horizon.

Powerball draws happen on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Louisville (+13.5) vs. Miami

Louisville has quietly built a balanced team, featuring the top defense in the ACC and an offense scoring over 32 points per game. Their matches against Miami have been tightly contested, with Louisville managing to keep losses minimal over 25 games.

LSU (+2.5) vs. Vanderbilt

This might be a defensive struggle for LSU, but Garrett Nussmeier needs to showcase his talent and remind everyone why he’s considered a top draft pick.

Georgia Tech (+1.5) vs. Duke

Haynes King faces a stout Duke team, testing both his abilities and those of a resilient secondary. Special teams efficiency will likely play a crucial role in this matchup, with Georgia Tech ranking significantly higher.

Oklahoma State (-5.5) vs. South Carolina

Oklahoma State has allowed few touchdowns this season, while their opponent sees a standout quarterback facing one of the nation’s strongest defenses.

Ohio State (-25.5) vs. Wisconsin

The offense ranked 122nd could encounter difficulty against a dominant defensive lineup that’s having one of its best seasons.

Ole Miss (+7) vs. Georgia

Georgia has struggled to perform as expected this season, having been a powerhouse in name only. Ole Miss edged past them last year and could do it again, particularly with a high-scoring offense.

Arkansas (+7.5) vs. Texas A&M

Texas A&M faces a capable offense after recent struggles; Arkansas’s challenges with self-defense might lead to a high-scoring affair.

Michigan State (+27.5) vs. Indiana

Team distractions may hinder Indiana’s performance—especially after their prior powerful victory at East Lansing.

Texas Tech (-9.5) vs. Arizona State

No matter which quarterback plays, Texas Tech has found success through strong backups and solid defense, remaining undefeated.

Oregon (-17) vs. Lagers

Oregon looks to capitalize on a struggling Scarlet Knights team after their first season loss, despite their mixed offensive rankings.

Kentucky (+12.5) vs. Texas

After weeks of preparation against Arch Manning, Kentucky’s defense stunned the competitive Longhorns, showcasing a significant upset.

USC (+9.5) vs. Notre Dame

Leading the nation in points scored, USC’s offense might prove more resilient than expected against a tough Notre Dame.

Auburn, Missouri (+1.5)

Securing another job after controversy, Hugh Freeze faces tough competition as Auburn’s elite defense could challenge a young quarterback’s debut.
