College student in Florida accused of first-degree murder following newborn's drowning

A 20-year-old college student from Florida is currently in custody after reportedly witnessing her newborn drown shortly after an unexpected birth in a bathroom. Authorities found a photo of Casey Anthony, known for her infamous 2011 trial related to her daughter’s death, on Ann Mae Demejilo’s cellphone, which raises some eyebrows amidst the investigation.

Demejilo was indicted on multiple serious charges on Monday, including first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, among others. Initially arrested in March for aggravated manslaughter, she faces significant legal consequences, according to the local state’s attorney.

The accusations suggest that Demejilo, who claims she was unaware of her pregnancy, gave birth in the bathroom. Allegedly, while cleaning up afterward, she drowned the baby in the toilet. Following the birth, she reportedly hid the infant’s body in a duffel bag and managed to continue her daily routine as if nothing had happened. Later, she is said to have buried the body in a shallow grave, which has shocked many in the community.

Authorities have noted that after a thorough investigation, Demejilo’s Internet searches included terms like “premature newborn infants” and “foods that reduce fertility,” which has fueled suspicion about her intentions.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staley expressed his disbelief at the situation, stating it’s hard to grasp how a mother could allow such a tragic outcome. He described it as a deeply distressing case, one that leaves many questions unanswered.

Initially called for a welfare check, police learned of Demejilo’s situation through a concerning message detailing the birth and subsequent events. During her interaction with the authorities, she admitted to experiencing severe abdominal pain before giving birth and claimed not to have realized the child could be alive.

Demejilo has since surrendered and remains in custody without bail. Her lawyer contends that the incident was isolated, emphasizing that she has no prior criminal history. The ongoing legal proceedings continue to attract attention, raising issues about mental health and the complexities surrounding unplanned pregnancies.
