Tragic Accident Claims Life of Nebraska College Athlete
A Nebraska university is in mourning after the tragic death of a student-athlete. Matthew Wing, a 22-year-old junior on the track and field team at Concordia University in Nebraska, lost his life in a car accident last Friday. The incident occurred when he and three of his teammates were hit by a driver going the wrong way.
According to reports, the collision took place on Interstate 49 in Cass County, Missouri. Wing’s vehicle was struck around 10:20 p.m. by a car driven by a 30-year-old man from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, who was traveling southbound in the northbound lane. Unfortunately, the force of the crash engulfed Wing’s vehicle, leading to his death at the scene.
The other occupants of the car were transported to the hospital, with two suffering minor injuries while one sustained more serious harm. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was also hospitalized but details regarding any charges have yet to be confirmed, as inquiries to the Missouri State Highway Patrol reportedly went unanswered.
The athletics department at Concordia University expressed deep sorrow over Wing’s passing in a heartfelt post on social media. They extended their condolences to his family, friends, and teammates, and offered prayers for comfort during this difficult time.
Wing excelled in track, earning GPAC Indoor All-Conference honors last year in the 4x4m relay. He was dedicated to his studies in secondary education and public health and fitness. Married to Bligh Worley on May 24, 2025, Wing was described in his obituary as an avid runner who deeply valued his faith and family.
His memory will be cherished by his wife, parents, and two brothers. Wing’s obituary noted, “The Lord’s love for Matt was evident through the way he lived his life.”
