Collin Morikawa confronts reporter at press conference: 'Don't undermine me'

Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa found himself in a bit of hot water after a conversation with a reporter before the Rocket Classic on Wednesday. At 28 years old, Morikawa has been grappling with a quote from Golfweek’s Adam Schupak, which surfaced in an article about his recent caddy changes.

In his piece, Schupak noted that Morikawa was uncertain about who would be his caddy moving forward, and he included a quote from Morikawa expressing his thoughts on the matter. During a previous exchange at the British Open, when asked about his caddy, Morikawa seemed to take issue with how his words were used.

“Please ask me what you want at my press conference later. I’m with my pro-am partner now,” Morikawa remarked, clearly indicating his frustration with the timing and context of the question.

Morikawa pointed out during the exchange that he didn’t appreciate how the quote painted him in a less than favorable light. “They pay a lot. They’re very important to the community,” he commented, implying that Schupak’s portrayal might have been misrepresentative. He added, “But I’m just telling you. I think there’s a perspective that people can read like that.” It’s rather interesting how interpretation can vary, isn’t it?

After this back-and-forth, Schupak revised the article, removing the original quote from Morikawa and replacing it with new comments. This isn’t the first time Morikawa has stirred things up in the media. Currently, he’s tied for 35th at the Rocket Classic with a score of 3-under par. On top of that, Min Woo Lee is leading the tournament with an impressive nine under par after the first round.
