Collin Morikawa confronts reporter at press conference: 'Don't undermine me'

Morikawa’s Press Conference Controversy

Collin Morikawa, a two-time major champion, recently sparked some controversy during a press conference ahead of the Rocket Classic. The 28-year-old golfer expressed frustration about a quote attributed to him in an article by Golfweek reporter Adam Schupak, which discussed Morikawa’s recent caddy changes.

Schupak’s piece highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Morikawa’s caddy situation moving forward. During this press conference, Morikawa mentioned he wasn’t sure who would be his caddy in the future, a sentiment that Schupak included in the story. However, Morikawa felt that the portrayal was off.

“Please ask me what you want at my press conference later. I’m with my pro-am partner now,” Morikawa stated, a quote he believed was relevant to the context of the conversation. When asked who would be caddying for him at the British Open, he took issue with how his earlier comment was interpreted. “I don’t know. I’ve read your article you wrote,” he remarked.

Morikawa added, “They pay a lot. They’re very important to the community. They’re incredibly significant to the Rocket Classic. And you say you’re putting me down by suggesting such a wait?”

It seemed like there was a mix-up regarding intent. Schupak thought Morikawa was giving him credit for his work while noting his focus was elsewhere. However, Morikawa made it clear that wasn’t how he viewed the situation. “Okay, we can all read it in a very different way. That’s not the way I read it,” he said.

Morikawa continued, emphasizing the varied perspectives on media interpretations, but stated he would move on from the issue, noting he’d have more media time soon. Following Morikawa’s comments during the press conference, Schupak modified his article to reflect new quotes from Morikawa.

This isn’t the first time Morikawa has faced scrutiny in the media, and his remarks have previously made waves, particularly concerning the Masters. As for the current state of play, Morikawa is currently tied for 35th in the Rocket Classic, sitting at 3-under par, while Min Woo Lee leads with a score of 9-under par after the first round.
