White House Press Briefing Highlights Tensions
During a recent press briefing, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins directed questions to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt regarding remarks made about National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard. Collins suggested that Gabbard’s standing was weakened due to those comments.
On Wednesday, Gabbard appeared alongside Leavitt, discussing new documents released from her office, which involved claims from Obama administration officials about Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Collins questioned Gabbard about the timing of the document release, implying it might be an effort to bolster her relationship with the President. “After you called your intelligence assessment incorrect, I wonder how Gabbard responds to critics who think these documents are being published for political gain?” Collins asked.
Leavitt quickly rebutted this line of questioning by asking, “Who’s making those claims? Will she attempt to release these to enhance her status with the President? Who said that?”
Collins responded by pointing out that the President had openly criticized Gabbard on her views regarding Iran. “He stated she was mistaken. It was captured on camera,” Collins stated.
Collins referenced a past comment from the President where he dismissed the intelligence community’s assessment about Iran’s nuclear capabilities. “He said, ‘My intelligence community is wrong’ and then directly called out Gabbard as ‘wrong’,” she noted.
In contrast, Leavitt insisted that the President had confidence in Gabbard, implying that the media was the source of any doubt. “The only ones suggesting that the Director of National Intelligence should publish evidence to enhance his standing with the President are from this room,” she remarked, suggesting that the press fuels distrust within the Cabinet.
Leavitt concluded by affirming, “I am with the President every day. He has complete confidence in Gabbard, and that has always been the case.”
