Colombia: Candidate supported by Trump wins against leftist rival in presidential runoff election

Espriella Wins Colombian Presidential Runoff

In a closely watched runoff election, Abelardo de la Espriella, the candidate supported by former President Donald Trump, emerged victorious over his leftist challenger, Iván Cepeda Castro. This win positions Espriella to take the reins of Colombia.

This runoff determined the definitive winner since there are no additional voting rounds involved.

With nearly all votes counted, Espriella, known as “El Tigre,” won by a narrowly defined margin of under one percent.

Following his win, Trump took to Truth Social to express his congratulations to Espriella, emphasizing a desire for a stronger connection between Colombia and the United States.

“Congratulations to ‘El Tigre’ (THE TIGER!) Abelardo de la Espriella, the new President of Colombia! It was my Great Honor to endorse him, and I look forward to working together to build a powerful relationship between Colombia and the United States of America, which will bring new levels of Greatness for both of our Countries!” Trump stated.

Espriella, who has pledged to combat “transnational crime and the radical left,” is set to succeed current left-wing President Gustavo Petro on August 7.

Expressing his appreciation alongside newly elected Vice President José Manuel Restrepo, Espriella acknowledged the nearly 13 million Colombians who supported him.

“Thank you for choosing us. Thank you for believing. With God’s help and the work of all Colombians, Patria Milagro [Miracle Homeland] will become a reality,” Espriella posted on X.

He added, “This will be the homeland of all and for all… of every good Colombian who carries the Homeland in their heart. We are going to build a Colombia where no one is left behind, where security, opportunities, freedom, and hope return to being the path to unite Colombians. Because this victory does not belong to a party or a campaign. It belongs to an entire people who decided to stand up and prove that Colombia is destined for great things.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached out to Espriella after his electoral victory, signifying a willingness to collaborate closely.

“The Trump Administration looks forward to working closely with your incoming administration to advance regional security cooperation, end illegal immigration to the United States, and strengthen our economic ties. Colombia’s best days are ahead,” Rubio shared on X.

Espriella’s victory marks a significant moment for Colombia, ushering in what he hopes will be a new era of opportunity and unity for the nation.
