Tragic Plane Crash in Southern Colombia
A Colombian military C-130H Hercules transport plane crashed on Monday in rural southern Colombia, resulting in the deaths of 66 individuals. This incident has been described by local media as one of the most devastating military aviation disasters in the nation’s history.
The crash occurred in Puerto Leguizamo, Putumayo, according to local newspaper El Colombiano. At the time, the aircraft was in the process of replenishing supplies, and it is believed that 128 people were aboard, including members of the security forces. As of early Tuesday, authorities reported that 66 were confirmed dead, with 57 others injured, and four individuals still unaccounted for.
Among the injured, 15 are reported to be in critical condition. Nine of those have already been evacuated from the scene, while three were transported to the capital, Bogotá, due to the severity of their injuries.
As per El Tiempo, the military aircraft had recently arrived from the Military Air Transport Command (CATAM) in Bogotá for a stopover. It was carrying 11 crew members along with fuel and two naval trucks. After boarding an Army platoon and police officers, the plane took off but crashed about 1.5 kilometers from the airfield shortly thereafter.
Reports suggest that some personnel were leaving for vacation while others were arriving for routine security duties. The cause of the crash remains unclear as investigations are ongoing.
Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the aircraft was deemed flight-worthy at the time of the incident and emphasized that there was no indication of an attack by illegal actors based on the information available. He noted that the explosion of some of the ammunition on board contributed to the chaos, explaining some of the sounds heard in social media videos.
Mr. Sánchez expressed condolences, describing the accident as a tragic event for the nation. He extended support to the families of the victims, saying, “May our prayers be with them and bring them comfort.”
Carlos Claros, head of the municipal government in Puerto Leguizamo, reported that some soldiers managed to jump from the plane as it began to break apart, possibly saving their lives but also sustaining injuries in the process. He mentioned the distress these young individuals are experiencing.
In reaction to the tragedy, President Gustavo Petro, who is nearing the end of his term, lamented the incident. He attributed the disaster to a decline in military equipment and bureaucratic delays that have obstructed modernization efforts he initiated over a year ago.
