The second-in-command of a violent Colombian gang was arrested this week in Texas.
Adelvis Pirela, 29, one of the most senior leaders of the Los Satanas gang, was arrested Tuesday in New Braunfels, Texas.
According to local news outlet NEWS4SA, Pirela is wanted in Bogotá, Colombia, on suspicion of involvement in at least four murders, extortion and drug trafficking.

”[Pirela’s] According to local media outlet KENS5, his role within these organizations is to distribute pamphlets and collect extortion charges, and if they don’t pay, he apparently threatens and attacks the victims and their relatives. ” said Leonor Mercian Lopera of Bogotá’s public prosecutor’s office.
Pirela fled Colombia and traveled through Central America to the U.S.-Mexico border to continue his extortion activities, General José Daniel Galdron, commander of Bogotá’s Metropolitan Police Department, told the outlet.
Mr. Pirela was arrested by the San Antonio Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with state and local authorities and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Bogotá’s mayor, Carlos Fernando Galán, has called on Colombia’s national authorities to ensure that Pirera is brought to justice and kept off the streets.
Mr. Galan also warned that steps must be taken to prevent Mr. Pirela from continuing his criminal activities in prison.
“We need to ensure that they don’t continue to commit crimes from prison, because that ultimately creates what we’re seeing here,” Galan said, according to KENS5.

He continued: “This is something I take this opportunity to call on national governments to ratify, because the authorities who catch and prosecute criminals are working hard to ensure that special measures are taken against them. Do not continue to commit crimes from prison, because it is extremely important to commit criminal acts. ”
It’s unclear exactly how long Mr. Pirela has been in the United States or when he entered the country.
