Colombian woman faces charges for identity theft, illegal voting, and benefit fraud.

Media sparks debate over “meaningless” deportation stories

A woman from Colombia, who has lived in the U.S. illegally for over 20 years, is facing serious charges. Lina Maria Orovio Hernandez, 59, allegedly assumed a stolen identity, collected more than $400,000 in fraudulent federal benefits, and even voted illegally in the 2024 presidential election, according to federal prosecutors.

Orovio-Hernandez reportedly acquired welfare benefits and multiple state IDs while using a false identity. She registered to vote using this stolen identity in January 2023, participating in last year’s presidential election. Surveillance footage from November 5, 2024, shows her at a bank wearing an “I voted” sticker, as mentioned in court records.

The case has drawn attention, particularly regarding the impact of her actions. It raises questions about the integrity of the voting process. Her charges include misrepresentation of her Social Security Number, making false statements during a passport application, aggravated identity theft, and fraudulently receiving governmental aid.

Since February, she has been in federal custody facing numerous charges. Prosecutors noted that Orovio Hernandez wrongfully received significant benefits, such as $400,000 in Section 8 rental assistance from October 2011 to January 2025, along with considerable funds from Social Security and food assistance programs.

Officials highlighted the severity of her situation. For over two decades, she allegedly built her life on the foundation of a stolen identity, which included illegal voting and extensive financial gain from government programs meant for citizens in need. “The right to vote is a privilege reserved for U.S. citizens,” officials stated, emphasizing the disparity in her fraudulent actions.

Additionally, Orovio Hernandez applied for a U.S. passport, falsely claiming to be a citizen born in Puerto Rico. Authorities confirmed that she had no lawful claim to any of the benefits she received.

A special agent from the Office of the Inspectors emphasized the broader implications of such identity theft, highlighting the systemic abuse of programs designed to assist those genuinely in need.
