Colombia's Gustavo Petro Reacts Angrily After Trump Labels Him a Drug Dealer

Trump’s Controversial Remarks Spark Tension with Colombia

Colombia’s leftist President Gustavo Petro criticized former President Trump, labeling his comments about Colombia as “disrespectful and ignorant.” This remark came after Trump referred to Petro as an “illegal drug dealer.”

The Colombian administration expressed that Trump’s statements were a “direct threat” to the country’s sovereignty.

In a post on social media, Trump alleged that Petro leads an “illegal drug operation” and accused his government of failing to combat drug trafficking despite substantial U.S. financial support. Consequently, Trump declared a halt to all U.S. aid to Colombia.

“This drug production aims to supply massive quantities to the U.S., resulting in death and chaos,” Trump stated. He further criticized Petro, whom he branded as “highly unpopular” and insisted that the Colombian president must urgently address the drug violence, warning that the U.S. would take action if not.

Trump reiterated his plan to cut U.S. funding aimed at curbing cocaine production, describing Colombia as an “out of control drug machine.” He described Petro as “the worst president in history” and claimed he exhibited “mental problems.”

“When looking at the fields, it’s clear they’re filled with drugs, which then get refined and exported, destroying families,” he added. “Colombia is indeed out of control, and we have an utterly incompetent leader.”

Petro initially responded by calling Trump out on social media, suggesting that he read “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez to understand Colombian culture better.

In a subsequent message, Petro proclaimed himself a socialist and emphasized his commitment to the common good, asserting that he is neither a businessman nor a drug trafficker. “Greed is not in my heart,” he said, highlighting that he views himself as a protector of lives rather than an embodiment of capitalist excess.

Petro also posited that Trump was misinformed by his advisors and declared himself as the principal opponent of drug trafficking in contemporary Colombia.

Moreover, Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Trump’s remarks as “offensive and disrespectful,” arguing they undermined the Colombian president’s efforts against drug trafficking.

The ministry defended Petro’s leadership, asserting that he has led significant drug seizures during his presidency and launched extensive efforts to combat the drug issue across the region.

In light of this diplomatic spat, Petro recalled Colombia’s ambassador to the U.S. for consultations, signaling potential implications for bilateral relations.

As a former member of the leftist M19 group, Petro is nearing the end of his presidential term and has made headlines for advocating the legalization of cocaine, which has seen increased production in Colombia under his administration, according to the UNODC.

Recent claims have emerged regarding Petro’s challenges, with former officials alleging he struggles with drug use, which has led to calls for investigations and even resignations. These accusations put additional pressure on his administration as the Colombian Congress remains deliberative.

Petro’s recent criticism of Trump escalated after Trump accused him of complicity in violence in Gaza. As tensions rise, Petro’s vocal opposition to U.S. military actions against drug trafficking vessels has led to the U.S. State Department revoking his visa, further complicating diplomatic interactions.
