A Colorado suspect carrying more than $8,000 worth of stolen goods from a plumbing store is in custody after police caught him trying to use Uber as a getaway vehicle.
The man was stealing tools from a plumbing shop in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, last week when he called an Uber to pick him up.
Wheat Ridge Police say the store owner called 911 to report a hole in the store's fence and told officers that video from the store's surveillance camera showed a suspect stealing tools inside the store. , corresponded to the same store.
When officers arrived at the scene, an Uber driver waiting nearby told them that a passenger, Jose, was heading toward the vehicle.

“Are you looking for an Uber?” an officer asks the suspect in body camera footage released by police.
The suspect was seen wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood pulled up, a black ski mask pulled down, looking away and with his hands in his pockets.
“Um…no,” he answered hesitantly.
The man then claimed his name was “Raul” and took several steps back, away from the officer. Officers quickly caught him, but he told them he wasn't trying to run away.
He maintains his innocence and claims he was walking to his mother's house.
Officers told him he matched the description of the thief, but he insisted he was not the person they were looking for.

The suspect was not carrying any identification showing his name as “Raul,” and when officers searched his backpack, they discovered stolen tools.
More than $8,600 worth of power tools were found inside the suspect's backpack.

“Having an Uber pick you up at the crime scene may not be the best idea,” Wheat Ridge police wrote on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter).
He was taken into custody and a fingerprint scanner identified him as Jose. He was charged the next day with multiple charges, including theft over $2,000, trespassing and making a false report to authorities, according to court records.
