Tragic Incident Involving Unlicensed Teen Driver
A young woman in Colorado lost her life due to a car accident caused by an unlicensed teenager who was an illegal immigrant. This week, the teen was allowed to walk free after receiving a lenient plea deal from the local District Attorney’s Office.
According to reports, the incident occurred in July 2024, when Caitlin Weaver was killed in a crash involving a 15-year-old driver who was speeding at nearly double the limit—over 90 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone. The vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, struck Caitlin’s Volkswagen in Aurora, a suburb of Denver.
At the moment of the accident, Caitlin was stopped at a stop sign and was on a call with her boyfriend. Her father noted that she had let another car pass just before the crash. “She didn’t even see him coming,” he expressed, emphasizing the speed at which the teen was driving.
Caitlin survived for two days after the crash before succumbing to her injuries. She was known for her caring nature, having previously volunteered at a suicide hotline and worked at a drug rehabilitation center.
The identity of the teenager involved is protected under state laws concerning juvenile offenders. The District Attorney’s Office, led by Amy Padden, offered the teen a plea deal that required him to admit guilt, attend school, and not break any additional laws. Initially, he faced serious charges, but those were significantly reduced in a later decision.
Following a change in the District Attorney’s administration, the approach to the case shifted. Some community members, including Caitlin’s father, are questioning why the prosecution handled the case as they did. “If he had shot someone, it would have been a different story,” he remarked, highlighting a perceived lack of deterrence in this situation.
Initially, there were discussions about deporting the teenager back to Colombia, but his application for asylum complicated those efforts.
Following the plea agreement, a representative from the District Attorney’s office remarked that the tragedy serves as a powerful reminder about the dangers of speeding, not just impaired driving. They acknowledged that Caitlin’s death stemmed directly from the actions of the teenager driving significantly over the speed limit.
