Aspen Acres Fire Continues to Rage in Southern Colorado

Firefighters are battling the Aspen Acres Fire in Southern Colorado, which has rapidly expanded to tens of thousands of acres. The blaze first ignited on Monday, June 29th, approximately 10 miles northwest of Rye, Colorado, near the Aspen Acres Campground, as reported by InciWeb, a system that manages incident information.

Thanks to exceptionally dry conditions, the fire spread quickly, reaching around 89,000 acres as of Monday morning.

“It experienced explosive growth due to record low fuel moisture levels and persistent red flag conditions in the week prior to and days following the ignition. The fire was wind-driven by winds exceeding 40 mph, with gusts estimated to be up to 100 mph,” InciWeb noted.

Despite the severity of the situation, firefighters have made some progress in controlling the fire.

“Firefighting efforts continue to make progress after several days of rapid movement and shifting operations,” the information system reported.

More than 1,100 personnel are currently engaged in containment efforts, with the fire being reported at 14% containment. Evacuation orders and pre-evacuation warnings are in effect across Custer, Pueblo, Fremont, and Huerfano Counties.

The wildfire’s cause has been identified as human and is under investigation, but no further details are available at this time.

Across the Western United States, other wildfires are also causing concern. For instance, the Babylon Fire in Southeastern Utah has consumed over 90,000 acres with no containment in sight, and an estimated containment date of August 1st has been suggested by InciWeb.

In a tragic incident on Saturday, June 27th, three firefighters lost their lives and two others were injured in a burnover event while attending to the Knowles and Gores fires near the Colorado-Utah border. The fallen firefighters have been named as Emily Barker, 38; Nick Hutcherson, 27; and Sydney Watson, 27.

On Sunday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his condolences and ordered flags to fly at half-staff to honor the fallen heroes.

“My heart goes out to the friends, family, loved ones, and fellow crew members who mourn the loss of Emily, Nick, and Sydney,” Polis stated.
